The Maricopa Veteran Care Center was founded in December 2017 by Chrystal and Kent O’Jon. The objective of the MVCC is to provide free counseling (first two sessions) to the citizens of the city of Maricopa, Arizona. Initially, free counseling sessions were being offered to only military veterans who reside within the city limits. However, it was decided between Chrystal and me (Kent O’Jon) to include first responders and citizens within the city of Maricopa.

Maricopa Veterans Care Center:

The MVCC is 5013c nonprofit organization. The goal of the. MVCC is to provide services and to promote mental wellness in the City of Maricopa community. The MVCC is financially sustained by donations. One of our primary benefactors is ACP Painting (a local company here in Maricopa.)

The MVCC uses its donations to provide free counseling sessions to citizens in need here in Maricopa.

Counseling:

Counseling is defined as the provision and guidance in resolving personal, social, and psychological difficulties, especially by a professional (Oxford Dictionary definition.)

Why include Everyone?

In 2020 there was a suicide incident involving a young man who was an employee of McDonald’s (Casa Grande Highway.) The victim was well known and popular among his peers and customers. No one suspected that this young man was having any problems.

He was outgoing, had a vibrant personality and it appeared that he had no issues. One day during his lunch break, he simply walked to his vehicle, sat inside, and shot himself. No suicide note, no explanation. Afterwards, Chrystal and I decided to reach out to citizens to include everyone (not just veterans, and first responders.)

How the program works:

It is quite simple. MVCC has an agreement with Northern Lights Counseling Group. NLC is a locally based organization here in the city of Maricopa comprised of professionally trained and state licensed therapists. If a citizen requests services, the citizen only must call Northern Lights at 623 243 2774 and mention MVCC. An appointment will be scheduled, and the initial two sessions will be covered by the Maricopa Veterans Care Center. If more sessions are requested, the patient either will pay out of pocket or initiate insurance benefits. NLC may be googled for further information about the organization.
