From the days of Frederick Douglass, many people of African descent went to Paris for opportunity and a respite from overt racism. Tomes have been written on the subject. Our tour will introduce you to some of these legendary figures, taking you back to Jazz-era Paris with a special focus on Josephine Baker, and continuing to the current City of Light. We’ll visit the vibrant 18th arrondissement and its Château Rouge-Goutte D’Or neighborhood where peoples from the whole of the African diaspora congregate and live. And we’ll travel to the beautiful Dordogne Valley, where Josephine Baker lived and raised her family in a magnificent chateau.
Lest you think this a class on history, we’ll pepper each day with those little luxuries that Paris is famous for – a welcome coupe de champagne, dining in a legendary brasserie (Josephine Baker’s favorite), a macaron class, and a wine tasting tour.
Then we’ll decamp to the Dordogne to visit so many gorgeous sites, stay in a petite Chateau and make a pilgrimage to Josephine Baker’s Cinderella like chateau to learn that she was oh so much more than a dancer at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees.
